Thai community, Phuket.
The Thai community
flows through this predominantly Chinese and Muslim
village as it's municipal and provincial government.
The Buddhist temples stands out as an outpost,
unconnected to the main life of the village.
The Heroines Monument
marks the victory of the Thai people over the
Burmese in 1785.
Kunying Jan, the wife of Phuket's governor who had
just died, and her sister Mook tricked the Burmese
and led to a rout by the Thai army which swept the
Burmese out of Phuket.
In honour King Rama 1 gave the sisters the honorific
titles of
Thao Thep Kasatri and
Thao Sri Sunthon.
Although there is little presence of Thai people in
the central parts of the village and lifestyle, many
Thai people have moved into the area to find work as
rubber tapers, construction workers from the north,
and domestics for the wealthier staying at The Boat
Lagoon, Chern Chuun.
The present King's
statues and posters are often found on the main
Thepkrassattri Road to celebrate National days.
