The Muslim community is the predominant community in Koh Kaew. As with many villages in the south of Thailand, the Muslim communities have developed along the the coast.

Work. Being on the sea the Muslim communities fish, farm the mud flats for shell, develop prawn farms. Many Muslims become boat captains and work in the marine leisure industry.

Mosque. The main Mosque has a strong influence on the community and the call for prayers can be heard before sunrise and sunset. Although many families prefer the women to wear the purdah by international standards Thai Muslims are easy going and flexible.

Food. The Muslim have a huge variety of fish dishes. Local favorites are Geng Som, garlic and very spicy fish soup. The roti curry cafes like the Marina Kitchen are often full and often Malaysian Muslims stop to eat during the holidays on Phuket.

Play. As with many takraw and football are played in the early evenings by the men and badminton by the women.
